Unity Theatre in Liverpool is situated within a converted mosque. During the conversion, two large stained glass windows were preserved in double glazing and then stored away.
We were approached by the theatre to design and make two large frames which would display the glazing in front of the floor to ceiling windows in the cafe area, creating a focal display in the space. During the design process, it became apparent that it would be a missed opportunity not to also incorporate seating into the design.
The client requested that the design of the piece must live up to the grandeur of the stained glass, not be overshadowed by it. By pairing sapele with maple, we created contrast within the woodwork, resulting in eye catching details and clever joinery.
This project was created as part of a Fibres Workshop collaboration.
